Content Guidelines for Mobile Push Notifications
On iOS and Android, the recommended character length of your mobile push notification will depend on the OS version, device model, and any accessibility settings applied.
For example, in the body, iOS allows character limits of anywhere between 150-230 characters whereas the Android notification tray allows much greater character limits of up to 450 characters.
However, as with most things, less is more…
Therefore, for the title, we recommend keeping this under 40 characters (we think 35 - 37 characters should avoid ellipses on most devices). For the body, we recommend keeping this to under 150 characters.
Content Guidelines for Web Push Notifications
The recommended length of content for your web push notifications will depend on the operating system and browser (Edge, Chrome, Firefox, Safari), and there are significant differences between Windows and MacOS.
On Windows, a title of 54 characters and a body of 139 characters will work for most browsers and is recommended for Windows 10. For Windows 8, the recommended number for the body is 126.
On MacOS, the title needs to be 42 characters with a body of 88 characters.
For completeness, web push on Android browsers has title limits of 47 characters and body limits of 50 characters if using an image, or 440 characters without.
As with mobile push notifications, we would recommend keeping messages succinct, so as to avoid part of the message being hidden.
