What are Content Tags?
Brands can, at any one time, have hundreds of templates in use as part of complex, effective CRM marketing strategies. There are components in these templates that can be constant across the templates such as headers, footers, terms and conditions, and more.
Natively within the OptiMail editors, you can create and format a snippet of content once as a Content Tag, and add that tag to all relevant templates without creating a new component each time. When a change is needed, you can just edit the tag once, and the content will be updated across all templates using that tag.
Please note:
- Only admins can edit content tags
- If you edit this tag while in another template, it will be updated in all locations where the tag is used.
How to Create and Use Content Tags
You can easily create and edit Content Tags as part of your normal workflow, as part of your OptiMail template creation and editing. The process is slightly different for the Visual Editor and the HTML editor.
Please note:
Content Tags are not supported in Transactional Email Templates.
Creating Content Tags in the Visual Editor
- From the OptiMail Templates lobby, hit Create New, and open a new template using the Visual editor.
- In the template editor, give your template a unique name. Now, add all email settings as usual.
- Begin creating your email template by adding the relevant content blocks.
- To create a Content Tag, click on the block where you would like to insert the tag and choose Personalization from the edit modal.
- In the Personalization modal, click on Content Tags.
- This will open the Content Tag modal, where you can edit existing tags, or create new ones.
- To create a new Content Tag, hit Create New in the lower left corner of the modal.
- You can now add your content, making use of Personalization tags, and hyperlinks, editing and formatting the content as required using HTML.
- Hit ‘Save tag’.
- Alternatively, you can format the content as normal in the Visual editor, including basic formatting like color, italics, or bold.
- You’ll now be able to open any other template, and by accessing the Content Tag modal, add this tag to any other template.
Previewing Your Content Tag
To preview the populated Content Tag, simply hit Preview (you will find it in the top left corner of the Visual editor).
You’ll be able to preview your template, check your personalization tags, and ensure the Content Tag has been populated correctly.

Use Cases
Headers
Have multiple campaigns using the same header? Whether it’s a hero image, or simply a line of text, if you have content like this that will be repeated across multiple templates, Content Tags can be used to update all of these templates at once with just one edit. If you are using a hero image across multiple email templates, use HTML to add an image using <img>. Then, if you want to change the image across all of those templates, to highlight a new collection or season, simply update the Content Tag and the change will be applied everywhere that tag is used.
Footers
Footers are one of the most commonly duplicated types of content used in email templates. You may have a set Footer design for all email templates, or you may have a different design per market. With Content Tags, you can set up each of your Footer designs once, and then apply them to all relevant templates. When you need to make a change, just update the Tag, and all templates will be updated automatically.
