Using the Customer List Criterion

The Customer List criterion enables you to build a target group of customers who match a specific list of Customer IDs. You can do this by uploading a CSV file or syncing lists directly via API. Both options let you apply Optimove’s personalization and insight capabilities to customer data collected inside or outside the platform.
 

Uploading Customer Lists via CSV

You can upload a CSV file containing Customer IDs to create a target group that matches the customers on your list.

Example: Target New Lifecycle stage customers using a CSV list collected during the last Black Friday event.

Keep in mind that, like any other condition used to create a target group, the final audience is determined by the logic between conditions. In this case, the operator is AND, so only customers who are both in the uploaded list and meet the New Lifecycle stage condition will be included. If no customers meet both conditions, the group will be empty.

You can also use the Complex Selection option for a deeper level of personalization. For example, instead of targeting only New Customers included in the list, you could set Complex Selection rules to target New Customers OR New Customers in the CSV list.

Syncing Customer Lists via API

The List Sync API allows you to create and update static lists in Optimove directly from your internal systems. These lists are built from Customer IDs and act just like lists uploaded manually. You can use them for targeting and exclusions. They can also be combined with other target group conditions for the most up-to-date business logic.

Benefits:

  • Supports syncing customer lists maintained outside Optimove so they can be used to enrich segmentation inside the platform. 
  • Enables collaboration between BI, data science, and marketing teams, making the process smoother and faster.
  • Keeps targeting aligned with the most recent customer data.

 

Please note:

In all Target Groups, only the most recent update method is recorded in the update history. This means that if you create a Target Group via the List Sync API and later edit it in the UI, the record will show only the UI update and will not indicate that the Target Group was originally created via API. While this behavior applies to all Target Groups, it is important to be aware of it when using the List Sync API so you understand how update tracking works.

Use Cases Unlocked​

  • Always-On Updates: Stay agile with real-time segment refreshes, as new lists can be added or updated throughout the day.
  • Exclusion Segments: Effortlessly manage marketing preferences by updating exclusion lists via API whenever needed, keeping your targeting precise and current.

 

Limitations for Customer Lists (CSV and API):

  • Applies only to customers who are registered in Optimove. If this list contains customers that are not registered in Optimove, they will be excluded. If you want to know more about registering customers in Optimove, click here.
  • Up to 10 CSV lists per target group, max 500,000 customers per list.
  • Target group conditions are limited to a maximum of 20. Once the limit is reached, no additional conditions to the target group (such as customer lists) can be added.
