To unlock this capability, you will need to add DynamicMail to your Optimove package. If you can’t see this feature in your Optimove instance, contact your CSM to find out more.
The Location Images component displays either a map pinpointing the stores/locations closest to the recipient's location, or a specific image based on their location at the time the email is opened. This is a great component that enables the most relevant content to be displayed to the user, making the email even more engaging.
- Use the Component creator to choose:
- Geo-locating options
- Component dimensions
- Responsiveness type
- Component alignment
- Location radius (optional)
- Multiple maps pins
- Click-through URL (optional)
- Address line enabled (optional)
- The address line font color, font type, and font size
- The address line background color
- Fallback location and details
- Additional locations and details (as desired)
- Alternate text
- Components can be "fluid," which stretches the component to fit the width of the screen, or "fixed" to maintain the specified width of the component in all devices.
- Default is displayed in the case of a user/mail app with a proxy (e.g. Gmail), as well as when the user location cannot be identified.
- Images and custom fonts can be used after being uploaded to the File Manager from your computer or a URL. Please note that images must have the same dimensions.
- Click anywhere on the color box to change the color, by selecting it from the palette or inputting the appropriate Hex code, RGB values, or HSL values.
- All DynamicMail components support standard http and https URLs. For example, http://www.google.com is a supported URL format. They are also supporting a few deep link URL types for top apps. The validation supports the following app deep links:
- fb://
- instagram://
- snapchat://
- pinterest://
- twitter://
- linkedin://
- vnd.youtube://
- If you have an application that you would like to have supported, please reach out to our team for assistance.
- The content in the preview section will update when you click on the "Update Preview" button.
- Use the Creator to input the images for the component as it should appear inside the email and input an address to be displayed as the default image and link. Add or remove locations (up to 100) as desired. The more locations defined in different places, the more relevant the component will be for the recipient. If "custom link" is selected for default, the click-through link can be different for each location.
- By default we display the "closest location" to the user, no matter how far that may be. If you'd like to limit the radius of the "closest location", you can enter the distance in miles in "Location Radius". Users outside the set radius will be shown the default image.
Good to Know
- When the recipient opens the email, the component will run an algorithm that attempts to grab a valid IP address to determine the user's current location, Optimove will get the geo-location data from a database we host locally on our servers. That information is then correlated with the data entered in the Creator (the address, zip codes, etc. of prospective locations), and the closest location is pinpointed and displayed on the map.
- The images are accurate for recipients more than 20 miles away with an 85% accuracy rate in the United States. Please be in touch for accuracy rates in other countries.
- Recipients who use Gmail or a VPN (Virtual Private Network), will see the default image.

Recommendations
-
There is a limit of 100 locations that can be added manually to the Creator. If more locations are required, you can provide our DynamicMail team with a spreadsheet or any file of locations, which we can use to create a custom location images component using that data.
-
When a user sees the default image due to opening the email on a proxy, clicking on it enables the user's location to be detected and redirects them to the correct landing page. If a user sees the default image due to an inability to detect their location, they will be redirected to the default landing page on the click.
-
The size of the image uploaded to serve as the pin for the location should be between 30x30 pixels and 50x50 pixels. Please note that the system does not resize the icons--whatever size they are when uploaded is the size they will appear in the map image.
-
We recommend creating a custom graphic for dense urban locations with multiple locations within a 20-mile radius. The geo-location used in this component is based on the IP address provided by the recipient's Internet Service Provider (ISP); since it is possible that the geo-location registered for the ISP is not the same as where the individual is actually located, a custom graphic for dense locations will be more accurate.
Troubleshooting
- Are they using a VPN or Proxy? These cause the IP address to change and not be where they user really is.
- Are they using Gmail or Yahoo? These email clients use caching, so the IP address is of Gmail/Yahoo and not the users.
- The images are accurate for recipients more than 20 miles away with an 85% accuracy rate in the United States. Please be in touch for accuracy rates in other countries.
