ChatGPT Ads is OpenAI's advertising platform. Ads are shown to eligible ChatGPT users, and advertisers manage them in OpenAI Ads Manager.
The Optimove integration with ChatGPT Ads syncs a campaign's Target Group to a custom audience in your OpenAI ad account. When the campaign runs, Optimove adds the customers to the audience. When the campaign duration ends, Optimove removes them. You then use that audience to target customers in the ad campaigns you build in OpenAI Ads Manager.
Before You Start
Make sure you have the following:
- An OpenAI Ads account. You need access to OpenAI Ads Manager with permission to create API keys and custom audiences.
- Customer email addresses or mobile numbers in Optimove. Optimove matches your customers to ChatGPT users by email address or mobile phone number. If your batch data update does not include them, add them first. Your Customer Success Manager can help. Optimove never sends the plain email address or phone number. Optimove sends a SHA-256 hash of the normalized value.
- An approved ad account. Your ad account and your ads are subject to OpenAI's advertising policy. OpenAI does not allow gambling ads. This includes casino, sports betting, lottery, poker, sweepstakes, and any game with cash prizes. Financial services advertisers need OpenAI's approval before they can run ads. Optimove syncs the audience. The approval sits with OpenAI.
- A supported region. Make sure the countries you want to target are in a region where OpenAI supports custom audiences.
- The Social Channels package. This integration is part of Optimove's Social Channels package. Ask your Customer Success Manager if you are not sure your plan includes it.
Setting Up the Integration
Setup takes three steps. You do the first two. Optimove does the last one.
Create an Ads API Key
- In OpenAI Ads Manager, open Settings, go to API Keys, and click Create New Key.
- Give the key a name, for example, Optimove, and click Create.
- Copy the key right away and store it somewhere safe.
Contact Your Customer Success Manager
Send your CSM the OpenAI ad account name and ID, and the Ads API key. Your CSM passes them to the relevant team in Optimove. If you connect more than one ad account, send each account with its key and tell your CSM which Optimove brand it belongs to.
Optimove Connects the Channel
The Optimove integrations team configures the OpenAI Audience Match channel on your Optimove site. From then on, Optimove reads the custom audiences in your ad account every 30 minutes and lists them in Campaign Builder. Archived audiences and audiences in a failed state are not listed.
Executing Campaigns
Create the Custom Audience in OpenAI Ads Manager
- In OpenAI Ads Manager, go to Audiences (under Tools) and click Create audience.
- Give it a name you will recognize in Optimove, for example, Optimove - VIP reactivation.
- Leave the audience file empty. OpenAI lets you create an audience without members. Optimove adds the customers when the campaign runs.
Create one audience for each Optimove campaign you plan to run.
Schedule a Campaign in Optimove
- In Campaign Builder, select the OpenAI Audience Match channel.
- Select the custom audience you want to fill from the dropdown list.
Build the Ad Campaign in OpenAI Ads Manager
In OpenAI Ads Manager, create or edit the ad campaign that should use this audience. Add the audience to the campaign's targeting. You can show the ads to the customers in the audience, or you can stop the campaign from reaching them.
Optimove Keeps the Audience Up to Date
When the Optimove campaign runs, Optimove takes the customers in the Target Group, hashes their email addresses or mobile numbers, and adds them to the audience. When the campaign duration ends, Optimove removes those customers from the audience. Removal runs once a day, so customers leave the audience one to two days after the campaign duration ends. For example, a non-recurring campaign with a duration of 1 day keeps the customers in the audience for 1 day.
Campaign Status
You can follow the campaign in Mission Control.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Processing | Optimove is uploading the customers to the audience in batches. OpenAI confirms each batch. |
| Completed | OpenAI confirmed all batches. OpenAI then matches the customers in the background. The audience becomes available for targeting once that is done, which can take longer for large audiences. |
| Failed | OpenAI rejected the upload, the audience was archived, or no customer in the target group had a valid email address or mobile number. |
Good to Know
- Minimum audience size. OpenAI needs about 25,000 matched users before you can show ads to an audience. Matched means OpenAI found a ChatGPT user for the email address or mobile number. Unmatched values do not count, so the Target Group usually needs to be much larger than 25,000. The Audiences page in OpenAI Ads Manager shows the matched users for each audience.
- Valid email address or mobile number required. Optimove adds only customers with a valid email address or mobile phone number. A Target Group of 2,000 customers where 1,700 have one of them adds 1,700 customers to the audience.
- Processing time. OpenAI processes additions and removals in the background. The time depends on the size of the upload.
- No metrics in Optimove. Impressions, clicks, and conversions are available in OpenAI Ads Manager only.
- Regions. OpenAI supports custom audiences in some regions only. Make sure your campaign targets a supported region.
- Several ad accounts. Each Ads API key works for one ad account. Optimove maps each account to a brand on your Optimove site.
- Changing the API key. If you delete or rotate the key, Optimove can no longer add or remove customers. Tell your Customer Success Manager before you change it, so the new key can be set in Optimove.
